‘Weatherwiser’ community in Laguna showcased to ASEAN students

A hundred visiting students during the recent 3rd Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (3rd AFMAM 2017) toured a model community for weather and disaster preparedness in Binan City, Laguna recently.

WeatherPhilippines, in collaboration with the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), promoted its successful partnership with Biñan City through its City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). .

The visit included an orientation of WeatherPhilippines’ efforts toward building disaster-resilient communities, CDRRMO’s initiatives that focus on weather-related risk mitigation and climate change adaptation, and a tour of the CDRRMO facility—including the city’s command center and Automated Weather Station provided by WeatherPhilippines.

“We are pleased to be able to showcase our concrete efforts toward helping communities achieve disaster risk resilience and preparedness. We hope to be able to replicate these initiatives among other local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines,” said Dave Valeriano, WeatherPhilippines General Manager.

USAID (United States Agency for International Development) Indonesia and ASEAN Development Outreach and Communications Specialist Swiny Andina said the approach can be implemented region wide, and other ASEAN countries would benefit from it.

“The visit was very interesting for us, especially for me. It was really great to see firsthand a successful example of private sector, NGO, and local government partnerships in this regard,” Andina said.

“I was really impressed with the fact that you [WeatherPhilippines] have managed to deploy over 800 weather stations through your partnership,” she added.

The visit was also graced by Biñan City Mayor Walfredo Dimaguila, Jr., Maria Bonacua, Biñan City Population Officer and CDRRMO Head, and Liza Agullo, LCF representative.
