WeatherPhilippines capacitates 10 CEBU LGUs on weather technology

WeatherPhilippines Foundation Inc., in partnership with Aboitiz Foundation and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), has teamed up with local government units in the province of Cebu to further strengthen its weather-related disaster-preparedness advocacy.

Last July 18, 2014, WeatherPhilippines organized its Capacity-Building Training for ten Cebu local governments, whose territories were classified as priority meteorological sites. During the event, 26 attendees, inclusive of mayors and municipal disaster risk reduction and management officers (MDRRMOs) learned how to setup and maintain the assigned Automated Weather Stations (AWS), and how to access weather data from the weather portal weather.com.ph.

After the training session, ten AWS units were assigned and deployed to each local government after signing the Memorandum of Agreement  (MOA) detailing the partnership with WeatherPhilippines.

Alcoy Mayor Nick delos Santos, on behalf of the Cebu local government units, expressed appreciation for WeatherPhilippines’ initiative: “Information is power…We commit that we will protect, maintain and clean (the AWS)”.

This Capacity-Building Training program is part of WeatherPhilippines Foundation’s goal to complement the government’s efforts in reducing risks associated with weather-related disasters. So far, WeatherPhilippines has installed more than 470 weather stations across the country, and has trained around 900  local government officials in just two years.
