CitySavings and WeatherPhilippines: Building a #WeatherWiser DepEd Community

Several typhoons and weather disturbances affect the Philippines annually and impact the safety of both teachers and students. This prompted City Savings Bank (CitySavings) to support a #WeatherWiser nation in partnership with Weather Philippines Foundation (WeatherPhilippines) back in 2015. Last year marked the formal agreement between the bank, WeatherPhilippines and the Department of Education (DepEd) through a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to conduct Weather 101 and Tropical Cyclone 101 nationwide.

This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aims to empower science and technology teachers and DepEd disaster risk reduction management officers to prepare and protect their communities from the impact of adverse weather disturbances.

“We always get information forecasts from television and radio news however death toll is still high and damages of properties are still devastating.  This only means that the effect can be minimized if we just know the appropriate disaster preparedness action plan”, shared WeatherPhilippines Sustainability Specialist Margarette Lim as she emphasized on the importance of proper information dissemination during calamities.

Mark Lawrence Valencia from Sindalan Elementary School in San Fernando, Pampanga mentioned the significance brought by the intensive workshop, “The seminar is very appropriate to all students and teachers because it promotes awareness and understanding of Tropical Cyclone, a prevalent hazard affecting our country”.
Valencia further expressed his gratitude for this learning opportunity, “I truly appreciate CitySavings and WeatherPhilippines for having this initiative and I will ensure to share my takeaways to fellow colleagues and other schools in my region”.

To date, a total of 160 divisions and over 1,500 educators are now empowered by CitySavings’ Weather 101 and Tropical Cyclone 101 in partnership with WeatherPhilippines as they continue to fulfill the promise of advancing business and communities and building a #WeatherWiser nation.
