Aboitiz Construction receives worldwide safety excellence award

Aboitiz Construction, Inc., (ACI) received a worldwide safety excellence award from global engineering company, JGC Corporation (JGC) for attaining over 1.5 million safe manhours, without lost time incident in a ceremony held on July 20 at Radisson Blu in Cebu City.

Aboitiz Construction is the only contractor from the Philippines which received the award along with JGC’s five other contractors for ongoing projects worldwide including those in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Indonesia.

The award criteria includes the total recorded incident rate of close to zero, which is well and above the acceptable rate of 0.15. Commendation from JGC is also considered in the selection.

The award is for the ongoing construction project in Sarangani General Santos City for a 105 megawatt coal-fired power plant where JGC provides Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services with Aboitiz Construction as one of its major subcontractor. The project started in August 2017 and is expected to be completed by September 2018.

Aboitiz Construction has been a trusted partner of JGC for at least 15 years in mining, power and petrochemical projects. Its mining project in Taganito, Surigao received a safety excellence award for attaining 4.1 million safe man hours in December 2012.

Alberto Ignacio, Jr., President and Chief Operating Officer of Aboitiz Construction said, “Creating a safety culture starts at the top, with employers who recognize the need for processes that are easy to follow. This is what we practice and consistently implement to ensure that our workers and staff return safely to their homes everyday. Practicing safety and being careful costs us nothing but carelessness may cost our lives.” He also thanked the project management team led by Project Manager, Rommel Yu and Quality, Safety Health and Environment Head Ambrosio Ompad for making the award happen. Aboitiz Construction’s manpower is currently at 1,300 including subcontractors.
