1,146 Aboitiz team members complete ‘No Impact Challenge’

Aboitiz team members nationwide recently heeded call to save the planet, taking on fellow team members in a fierce yet friendly “carbon cleanse” competition that significantly shrunk their overall environmental impact: The Aboitiz No Impact Challenge.

The Aboitiz Group’s own version of the No Impact Project global initiative is a groupwide campaign that aims to encourage team members to make simple lifestyle choices that promote wellness while reducing carbon footprint.

Inspired by the Aboitiz Group’s purpose, to drive change for a better world, this initiative is part of the Aboitiz Race to Reduce (R2R) 2.0 program that underpins the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to resource efficiency and minimizing operational carbon footprint.

For four weeks, seven days a week, 1,146 Aboitiz team members accomplished various daily challenges based on weekly themes that touched on different areas of daily living where individuals can start making positive change. The team with the highest collective carbon emissions reduced and the most number of goals accomplished at the end of the campaign wins the challenge. This year, a team from Aboitiz Construction emerged victorious with 10,269.30 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per capita avoided.

“it was initially a struggle, but at the end of the day I am grateful to our team for being willing to go the extra mile–on top of their workload–in completing this challenge. we succeeded and because it was a collaborative effort, and I couldn’t be more thankful for this experience,” said Erika Quiñones, Aboitiz Construction Human Resources Event Coordinator.

First launched in 2016 among Aboitiz Corporate Center teams in Cebu and Taguig Cities, the Aboitiz No Impact Challenge was implemented groupwide for the first time. At the end of the four-week challenge, Aboitiz team members managed to avoid a record total of 208,500 kg CO2e, or the equivalent of driving 40 vehicles a year or burning 21,000 gallons of gasoline. This was a huge jump from the approximately 30,800 kg CO2e avoid last year.

“During the last four weeks, we discovered how eco-friendly lifestyle choices can also be practical, cost-efficient, and easy to do. Beyond the team competition, efforts to curb our carbon habit is a strong statement in support of our Group Purpose: to drive change for a better world by advancing business and communities,” said Txabi Aboitiz, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. Chief Human Resources Officer.

“Congratulations and thanks to all the A-People who worked very hard to make this such a success!” Aboitiz added.

Sustainability and the detailed reporting of sustainability initiatives are nothing new in Aboitiz. In May 2017, the Aboitiz Group launched its Aboitiz 2016 integrated annual report, organized and presented in accordance with the G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines of international sustainability reporting organization GRI, with key performance indicators also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The report’s materiality, as defined by the GRI G4 reporting framework, includes topics and indicators that reflect the Aboitiz Group’s significant economic, environmental, and social impacts or would substantively influence the assessments and decisions of stakeholders.
